How to Translate English to Hinglish with ChatGPT?
In India, we talk with a mix of Hindi and English. We hardly speak in pure Hindi. As a content creator working in tax, law, education, and training, I don’t need only Hindi — I need Hinglish that is a mixture of Hindi and English. Most of the words are in Hindi, a few words are in English.
Can ChatGPT do this? I did a few experiments, and arrived at a prompt that perfectly translates English sentences to Hinglish the way I want.
Let me share with you the magical and simple prompt for English-to-Hinglish translation that really works magically.
1. The Prompt
I did a few trials and errors, here’s the prompt I now use in ChatGPT for effective Hinglish translation:
Translate this text into simple Hindi. Keep maximum words in Devanagari. Keep the tough and legal words in English script.
The problem with pure Hindi translation is that it becomes too formal, too textbook, and readers or listeners find it really hard to relate to. For example:
– The sentence
”Aadhaar authentication is now mandatory for GST registration applicants”
becomes —
अब वस्तु एवं सेवा कर पंजीकरण के आवेदकों के लिए आधार प्रमाणीकरण अनिवार्य है।
The above sentence is technically accurate. But, how many of us actually speak like that? Do we??
Now look at the same sentence after applying the suggested prompt.
अब GST registration के applicants के लिए Aadhaar authentication ज़रूरी हो गया है। Simple. Conversational. Relatable. That’s the power of using the word “Devngari” in prompt.
3. What Happens When I Just Say “Translate to Hindi”?
If you just tell ChatGPT to “translate to Hindi,” it often gives you too pure Hindi.
That means:
– Common words like “registration”, “compliance”, “notification” get translated into difficult Hindi words which we speak less in our day to day conversation. The output is grammatically correct but not practical for audio or visual content.
Your audience — especially those not fluent in formal Hindi — starts losing interest.
For spoken content like YouTube scripts, presentations, or reels, that will be a heart breaker. Isn’t it??.
4. What happens when I use the word “Devanagari” in the Prompt?
That’s where the magic happens.
By telling ChatGPT to keep most words in Devanagari, the response becomes more relatable. And by instructing it to retain tough and legal terms in English, the meaning stays accurate and clear.
So this sentence —
“Taxpayers who do not complete the biometric authentication within 15 days will face rejection of application.”
— gets translated as:
जो taxpayers 15 दिन के अंदर biometric authentication complete नहीं करते, उनका application reject किया जा सकता है।
This is the sweet spot where Hindi and English meet naturally — just like we speak every day.
If you’re creating content for an Indian audience — whether it’s educational, legal, or even casual — then English-to-Hinglish translation using ChatGPT is a powerful tool. And the right prompt makes all the difference. So next time you’re writing, try this:
Translate this text into simple Hindi. Keep maximum words in Devanagari. Keep the tough and legal words in English script.
Your audience will thank you — because they’ll finally connect with what you’re saying.
